Boating on the Upswing:
For the Company That Gets Recreational Boaters Home After
a Breakdown, Four Locations Added and Tows Are Up
As the
economy slowly improves, so has recreational boating. In May, the National
Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) reported healthy growth for the $35.4
billion recreational boating industry. Continued good weather has also increased
summer boating activity, according to TowBoatUS.
The national on water assistance service for recreational boaters has over 300
locations across the US, adding three new “ports” so far this year and
re-opening another. All were on inland waters.
North
Carolina saw the new addition of TowBoatUS High Rock Lake and TowBoatUS Lake
Tillery. The third new port was TowBoatUS Sodus Bay in New York’s Thousand
Island region. TowBoatUS Red Wing, on the Upper Mississippi in Minnesota,
reopened after a year hiatus. These four add to the over 100 inland lake and
river TowBoatUS ports for freshwater boaters.
“We continue
to put focus on the inland fishing and boating market,” said BoatUS Towing
Services Vice President Adam Wheeler, “And show why it’s so important to carry
a BoatUS membership card with a towing plan in your tacklebox.” Wheeler also
says if the weather holds – sunny days with little storm activity – the towing
service is likely to surpass last year’s 70,000+ requests for on water
assistance. The common reasons why boaters call the 24-hour service include
engine breakdowns, battery jumps, fuel drop off, towing and soft ungrounding
services. BoatUS also offers on road trailer and tow vehicle assistance to
trailer boat owners.
According to
the NMMA, the recreational boating industry in the United States has an annual
economic impact of more than $121.5 billion, supporting 650,015 direct and
indirect American jobs and nearly 35,000 businesses.
About Boat
Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS):
BoatUS is
the nation¹s largest organization of recreational boaters with over a half
million members. We are the boat owners’ voice on Capitol Hill and fight for
their rights. We help ensure a roadside breakdown doesn’t end a boating or
fishing trip before it begins, and on the water, we bring boaters safely back
to the launch ramp or dock when their boat won’t, day or night. The BoatUS
Insurance Program gives boat owners the specialized coverage and superior service
they need, and we help keep boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance
from the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Visit
