Capt. Jacob VanReenen of TowBoatUS Clayton is ready any time day or night to assist boaters.

Local Rochester, NY On Water Towing Company for Boaters Changes Hands

Capt. Jake VanReenen, who has been operating TowBoatUS Rochester, an on water boat towing and assistance company for recreational boaters since 2010, has expanded his business and is the new owner of TowBoatUS Clayton in New York’s famed Thousand Islands region. Capt. Jeremy Kellogg formerly owned the location for over 20 years and local boaters may recognize the former name of the business, TowBoatUS French Bay. With the ice melted, Capt. VanReenen is now ready 24 hours a day to assist anyone who runs aground, has a mechanical breakdown, needs a battery jump or runs out of fuel.

Much like an auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS offers Unlimited annual on water towing plans for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $72 a year that includes BoatUS membership. Without a towing plan, boaters face costs that average $750 per incident nationally. In addition to VanReenen’s locations in Rochester and Clayton, there are nine TowBoatUS locations in upstate New York, including Sturgeon Point, Buffalo, Sodus Bay, Oneida Lake, Oswego, Rouses Point and Lake George.

VanReenen’s desire to become part of the nation’s largest fleet of towboats dates back to his childhood summers. With “boating DNA” in his blood, as a young boater in the Thousand Islands he became fascinated by the work TowBoatUS French Bay was doing. “I’d actually follow them around in my boat,” he said. VanReenen earned his US Coast Guard captain’s license as soon as he was old enough, and a few years later opened TowBoatUS Rochester. VanReenen has lived aboard his 43-foot Albin trawler for the past five years, and has hired additional USCG licensed Captains to staff the Rochester and Clayton locations. Said VanReenen, “I get great satisfaction when I can assist someone who has run into trouble on the water, and I can help them get back to the dock safely. If they have a BoatUS Unlimited annual towing plan, they won’t get stuck with the bill.”

TowBoatUS Clayton is located in French Bay – to see the location on a map go to BoatUS.com/clayton. Stationed at the “port” is a 24-foot Zodiac Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat painted a distinctive red with “TowBoatUS“ on the cabin. With twin 150 horsepower outboards, the boat is ready to go at a moment’s notice and is fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel.

Boaters can contact TowBoatUS Clayton by hailing on VHF channel 16, calling the company directly at 315-775-4114 or by calling the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 dispatch at 800-391-4869. Assistance can also be summoned via smartphone with the free BoatUS Towing App, and BoatUS is also the only towing service that offers satellite messaging services with the SPOT and DeLorme inReach satellite communications services.
